Really...... close to never...... and I own one. How many bu of wheat per year do you move? For general scifering use $1.65 a mile for cost (package) 1 truck 1 tandem trailer. Since wheat is your crop in that area and would rarely need to truly dry wheat in a conventional dryer, why not consider basic storage (simple bin with floor and fan)? Built of course on the farms you farm in convenient locations to cut down on hauling transfer. In turn possibly not requiring any hauling on your part, allowing you to put that 20k a year into storage. Depending on the company and or coop many will pay a little premium and or haul it if it can be delivered when it's convenient for them and not you. It's a bit of a double edge sword...... Just a thought. Have worked out deals like this in the last couple years and it does two things, a: greatly reduces harvest bottlenecks b: less chaos during harvest. And if done right.... can be done with no trucks and just use grain cart/carts. If your current hauling situation with hiring out works in general, personally I would keep it hired out. Is it hard writing that 20k check...? Yes, but once it pulls out of the drive the liability and headaches are on them..... not you.
