Macon, IL
You are 100% right, I think it depends on location. Funny, I know someone not far from you who doesn't understand why I don't just hire trucking.

HERE we have a pretty small harvest window where 80% of guys start and finish within 4 weeks or so., and heavy corn so lots of volume fast. It is next to impossible to hire trucking when you want it-you may get one or two in the am or someone to drop one off at night-but the majority are employed full time by elevators, larger farms that operate outside the 4 week window, etc.

Personally I run a couple tandems and straight truck, I have a love/hate relationship with them. Hate the cost per mile for putting so few miles on-hate the manpower required-but there have been times where all 3 are in line at elevator and combine/cart are waiting for them to return-so I just chalk it up as timeliness. I would love to go to a semi-but have found tandem truck drivers (especially if automatics) are a lot easier to find-so it works for me.
