We have had stirrators in about 15 different bins, some for over 30 years. All of them are about 4 to 6" off the floor. The sweep auger will hit them all if you just let it run when cleaning the bin...as the post above said, we just tilt the stirring augers out of the way for the sweep to pass underneath.

That said, I don't really see anything wrong with having them short enought to clear the sweep, other than the problem you mention of dry corn on the bottom...I wouldn't think it would matter that much, tho.

Welding extensions on the bottom would probably work, if you are careful to line them up straight.

The only augers I know of that are more than 6" or so of the floor are the ones in bins with a Grain Flow or Shivvers type continuous flow unload, with bottom augers that run all the time when drying...most of those are cut off about 30" high.
