Missouri | If you find the file you are needing, I would try creating a new project in SMS, and reading that one file into that one project. What can sometimes happen is the data is still in the SMS database, but may have gotten "lost".
I once "lost" some data by spatial sorting with some incorrect boundaries. It scattered data into all kinds of wrong places with a single click. After a few hours of looking, and finding back most of it, I just gave up, rolled back to the previous day's backup, and went forward from there. The thing is, if that data has gotten "misplaced", SMS will refuse to read the data file again, as that data is already in the system, it's just hidden wherever you've accidentally told SMS to hide it from you (can be a maddening experience). I always make a backup before I do anything substantial amount of work in SMS, so that if click the wrong thing, I have something to fall back on (some of SMS's operations are otherwise irreversible).
