Subject: JD 4990 rotary wading up lodged orchard grass

Davis Creek, CA
I am trying to cut my second cutting of orchard grass. I had to wait longer than normal to start cutting because of possible rain. The wind has been bad, the crop is heavy and has now lodged.

When I am cutting the swather bogs down and then I hear the conditioner bang. I have looked at what has come out and it is all chewed up and in a big clump. I am cutting as fast as I can. At 9mph the crop pulls down the swather too much so I have to slow up, then it keeps doing it.

I have sped the discs up and down, which is way worse, up seems to help some. I have new knives on. I have put the 1000 rpm speed up kit for the conditioner rolls on. It is a 994 14.5' with steel conditioner.

Sometimes on first cutting it does the same thing. When I go to slow cutting 3 ton orchard grass. Seems to only happen in orchard grass. I have had the same problem with a NH 340 but mostly when the grass starts to get dry. I am about to try a hesston or new MacDon Rotary. Thanks for your help.
