Subject: RE: Louisiana Tops Nation's Soybean Yields

Franklinton, LA
I think several factors have changed soybean production in Louisiana in addition to genetics. With precision leveled fields and irrigation, we can add water as needed but equally important, we can get rid of water when it is not needed. Some people claim moving away from pre plant incorporated herbicides have helped increased yields. Less tillage, less soil compaction and an increase in soil organic matter could be a big factor. Who knows, maybe my retiring from the Extension Service could have helped! I just hope this trend continues. I can remember when Louisiana farmers often referred to soybean as poverty peas.
