Good points John and I would say maybe even apply this diversity to the rest of the operation.

Don't sell everything at a single elevator or processor build a working relationship with more than one merchandiser. Keeps everyone honest and hungry to get more business. Yes it's more hassle keeping tickets and settlements straight but it also keeps options open.

The bulk of my crops are delivered at harvest through contracts. I'm a one man show so if it's fit I have to run. One place absolutely refuses to be open on Sunday and has reduced hours on Sat. In a season like last fall where the number of fit days to run was drastically reduced having access to a place that is open 7 days a week made a huge difference.

Same with fuel, machinery, parts stores. It may be tough with multi store dealerships to get out of a service area. After all our local single location dealers got closed, I'm in the area between 2 chain dealers, 17 miles to one 30 to the other but it gives one options. Plus lots of other options for getting farm supplies and generic type parts. The Internet has made this much simpler to accomplish and price shop and compare.

Maybe even diversify insurance. Crop ins through one agent, vehicles through another, building and property at another. Some of the liability policies though want it all covered together to better control their risks.

Like John said its much easier to not have the diversity but if your locked into one place and something happens you could be held hostage by circumstances and not having other contacts until you can work through it.

Liken it to a submarine shooting torpedos they rarely send one to the target but instead send a spread of several. Yes more expended in sending multiples but more chance for ultimate success in the end.

I also agree do your own home work and don't trust or accept anyone's word as fact even on the discussion we have on here. Use them as a way to expand your understanding of things and challenge what you believe.

None of us here are experts by any means and don't ever consider what we discuss as advice suggestions or recommendations. As always take note of the disclaimer on all my posts.
