Virginia
Since you are staying in Charlottesville and maybe planning on going to Richmond, I would get off I-64 at the Glenside exit in Richmond, go south and get on Monument Avenue. After the tour on Mounument, get back on I-64 and go to Williamsburg.

When leaving Williamsburg, get on State Route 5 and you'll go by a lot of Plantations, some of which are open for tours, and head back to Richmond.

No way would I ever spend 3 days sightseeing in Charlottesville. Not really that much over there. Williamsburg and the drive on Route 5 is very worthwhile. The weather should also be warmer in Williamsburg. Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown would be my pick of sights in Virginia, especially if history is your interest.
