I don't think that nh3 does any quantifiable damage to any soil life.  There is so much there, it's like take the mold off the corner of the bread slice of moldy bread and then waiting for 2 days and seeing what happen to the fresh area.  It does take longer to break down from ammonium, so it is by it's very nature available longer and more so if the soil is colder.  I saw a slide on the different rates of lose of N in saturated soils just yesterday.   At 70 degrees and 3 days of saturated soils you can lose over 50% of uan.
