northeastern Ohio | United Local was one of the last ones to cancel, if that really matters. They said they cancelled due to "wind chill" predictions. I think every school in Columbiana County cancelled today. I drove to Salem this morning and saw a lot of kids out walking and playing. The wind is bad, but didn't seem to bother a lot of people. Most parents are smart enough to keep the kids in a car or shelter until the bus arrives.
I think it must come down to liability. The schools are scared of being sued and would rather cancel than take the chance. So they are erring on the side of caution. United Local is out of "calamity days" and gave the kids "blizzard bag" homework today so that they do not have to make the day up at the end of the year (teacher sends the homework over the internet). Great idea, but my boys were able to complete the assignments in a couple hours. Not really a "full" day of schooling, so it is really cheating the system, in my opinion. | |
