The town is along a state highway, but I wouldn't consider it a highly traveled one. The people who drive it either use it to commute to work, or use it for business. I've heard the term "bedroom community" used to describe towns like this and I think that is pretty much spot on. The people that live here either have one of the few jobs available in town, or drive to the nearby city for work. The people who are moving into the affordable houses are honestly there because of the low cost of living and sadly most are on government assistance and have not intention of working. The one business that is doing well has a terribly large turnover rate and has resorted to looking for legal foreign employees. It is a very sad situation, not only for us but for so many other towns. Even the larger towns that are on the rails that can keep the grain elevators going aren't what they once were. I love my town and the history behind it, but I just don't know what I can do to help it anymore. A while back I thought of having my wife open a coffee shop/small restaurant/craft store/ and a hair salon. She has done and still does some of those jobs, but it seems the only way to be able to make a go of it would be to combine all of these and hope to pay the light bill. Or, plan B...hope there's oil under our feet and that it hits $100 bbl again... sadly I think plan B is the more likely of the two.
