Louise, TX | How many days to you have to get planted normally (figure your normal hours planting). Then decide if you can add a few hours per day, might not be possible for a number of reasons like off farm job, livestock, family, or you are already running extreme hours. I am on wide rows here, but when I switched from 8 to 12 I was planting 2,400 acres with one planter. I just got tired of planting until 1 or 2 am, and my two girls are in activities after school now that I stop the planter for a couple of hours. I'll go back to planting after their games or whatever, but now only have to plant until 10 or 11 pm at the most. I also farm corn, milo, cotton, and soybeans so that spreads planting out a little bit.
It looks like it is going to be a really wet spring here (El NINO), so I just bought another used planter for a really good deal (40% of what local dealer wanted) since I have the help to run two. We usually fertilize in the winter then stale bed the crop, but we will probably be fertilizing and planting at the same time this year.
Getting your crop in timely could easily pay for the upgrade in only one year. Good luck with your decision. | |
