I was you in 1985. Except it was my own father, not FIL.

First you need to talk to your wife and make a mutual decision what you want out of life. When you have an agreement, tell her Dad what you're going to do. Then do it. It may be that you just need a vacation.

Does he know that if he loses you, he won't see his daughter or grandkids as much? That's pretty unavoidable.

Maybe he just needs a push, or maybe he thinks you have no other options. Don't short yourself and be that guy who gets close to retirement and doesn't own anything yet. Are you trying to do things an owner would do, or just following orders?

You went to college. Graduated? What degree?

There's worse things than not farming. Farming for free with no light at the end of the tunnel could be one.

$1800/month plus a place to live and a cell phone and a truck with gas plus a batch of steers(and probably a freezer full of beef)isn't really starvation wages. You could do worse. Especially if there is a realistic chance to get worked into ownership.
