Clark county Illinois | I know the "A" series is built considerably heavier than the straight "453,454,653,654,853 series. Two years ago I was running my 653 through an area that I knew had rocks and concrete in it (old bldg site). Both the wife and I were watching for foreign objects REAL closely, and the 653 sucked in a piece of concrete - it stopped at the entrance to the outside row, broke one of the gathering belts, and sprung the 2 halves of the row unit apart. I probably could fix it, but I would have to strip that side down to the frame, heat up the frame with a torch and hook a tractor on to it to pull it back in line.
I don't know if it's worth it. The day after we ruined that 653, I went to the JD dealer in Shelbyville, Ill and picked up a good looking 653A for $1000, brought it home, put the Bish adapter on it, and went back to cutting beans.
Also, there aren't many parts interchangeable between the straight series and the "A" series. | |
