I have read many times from the filter makers ,that over maintenance is the cause of most dry paper filter problems. People dropping dirt into the intake pipe,damaging seals and damaging the paper filter media from too much pressure,too close to the paper.
As Ham says,make sure your restriction indicator is working,and don't mess with the filter untill it is actually causing an air restriction. On my stuff I will carefully blow out a filter a couple of times then change it. With a good aspirator/pre cleaner system I rarely have to clean a filter more than once per year,and usually replace them every other year.
