Subject: RE: sunflowers as a cover crop

Gettysburg, PA

Good tap root to combat compaction, grows well here after wheat harvest for building up organic matter, gives the deer something to eat instead of corn, seed cost is fairly low, farmer's wife will love it when it flowersSmile, has worked well in a mix with vetch or peas as it gives them something to climb, bees love it.  All pretty good reasons to consider it.  We have a farmer here putting them in a mix and he likes the results, says the fields plant beautifully the following spring.  Hasn't been planted solo, thus my question.
