I live down on the SD border, but I remember in the 60's and early 70's the fighters and B52's would do practice runs at unbelievably low altitudes.    Then once in a while someone would go high and fast and you'd get a sonic boom.    Actually grew up thinking it was normal to hear a sonic boom, then one day they stopped and I don't think I've heard one in nearly 40 years.
