Subject: RE: Grinding stalks and putting on syrup

west central Iowa
The feed does not smell musty. The feed has a fermented smell to it but does not smell like silage to me. We need to obtain a certain grind rate to keep everyone happy. The more syrup you put on, the better job it does at driving the air out. I believe we ground this pile with a 6" screen. I would prefer to grind with a 4" screen but it slows the grind rate down (more $/ton grinding) and we would have to slow the syrup pump down and some of the truckers charge for the extra time. The mix helps with cattle sorting but we have pushed it and they have sorted. It seems its always that tough portion of the stalk about the size of a "sharpie" marker. We don't push the ground stalk in the ration as much as we used to.
