The diagrams seem to agree with what I had in mind. The last one just shows the limit switch for one extreme but not the other. If limit switches are needed for both extension and retraction then the arrangement can be expanded to have one on each end of the stroke.

I have worked with several actuators that did not have an internal limit switch but had a slip clutch type arrangement. In a manual setup (without a controller), it is assumed that the operator has enough sense to let go of the switch when the actuator has reached full extension.

For automatic control of a product with a rate controller, the system would not necessarily be aware of this and continue to try to extend the actuator to "make rate" eventually causing damage to the actuator.
