Thanks for your answer ...I know where you're coming from on this . yes silage is a good feed stretcher. I'm from the snowbelt farther north. We do grow corn for yearlings but the cows see none. We calve spring and fall but our cows have to produce on hay/baleage. Feed quality is more than sufficient with these to maintain a beef cow and ours are the cursed bred called limo. Our calves aren't as heavy as yours (550lbs) at weaning but in the lean years it works by keeping cost low. Don't get too dairy like with beef cows because they do have to work for you not you for them. An old cowman told me once that supplement feeding only masks the poorer cows into looking like good ones and keeping breeding stock from such cows leads to lower performance.
