| There's the old "There's nowt so queer as folk" Welsh saying too, although people today are probably more familiar with "Queer as Folk" the TV British and American shows. Hence the importance of classical literature at school, you get to see these words evolve over the centuries.
All languages have similar stories: Go tell a French kid that "embrasser" used to mean "to hug" ("bras" = "arm", as in "to embrace") instead of its modern meaning "to kiss", and they will feel "embarrassed" for you. By the way, note the recent usage of "they" (in this sentence, in place of the singular "kid") to signify that the kid can be either a girl or a boy, or... Note too how I nicely close the loop with that "singular" kid, which also means "queer." ;) | |
