Having run sows on dirt years ago, VERY CAREFULLY is the answer. Lol. In all seriousness we either locked the sows into the modified A house and lifted the piglets out through the back access panel by reaching in with kind of a shepherd's crook and hooking a hind leg. If they were indoors in a pen we turned the sows out to feed outside and then locked them outside while we worked piglets inside. The sloped roof of the modified A's made a good place to jump to if things went wrong out in the pasture. Very true as well that castrating was done at weaning and weaning was much later than in confinement, 5-6 weeks was not uncommon weaning age then.
