Subject: price protection ?

thorp wi.

so with the current price on feeder cattle iv decided to change my focus from finishing cattle to raising - backgrounding feeders, thinking my old dairy barn will be better suited for smaller cattle. so currently I have around 150 head on hand in various stages and weights, this ranges from about 65 Holstein milk calfs to about 40 started calfs some Holsteins some blacks weighing about 300lb to a group of bigger steers rangeing 450 to 800 lbs some Holstein some blacks. as you can see we are buying whatever we can at a workable price .thinking is to feed till spring, atleast the smaller ones, and then sell. bigger ones will sell sooner, anyway getting a fair amount of dollars tied up. so question is what are the options for some sort of price protection on such a variation of weights ? also no sure sell date ? have no experience with puts and hedges but willing to try. feel free to share your thoughts. thanks in advance.
