Northwest Iowa
We had this happen to us last February. 5 hours to the plant and 5 hours home. We initially hauled on a Monday morning and unloaded them back home on Monday evening. We just put the same ration in the bunk Monday night that we normally would have fed them and the same the next day. We ended up shipping them on Saturday that same week. We did not weigh the cattle when we loaded them that morning, but we did weigh the trucks before we unloaded them that night. I remember, they weighed 1503 off the trucks on Monday, and 1490 at the plant on Saturday. We worked with our buyer and they were fair with us. They paid the trucking on Monday, we paid the Saturday trucking. We used the 1503 weight plus extra shrink for the trip home and 3.5#/ day gain for the 4 extra days at home and the 'normal' dressing % we usually get at the plant. It was a big hassle, but we didn't lose any steers and they went back on feed fairly well. We also were feeding optaflex so we didn't want to feed them for two more weeks to get more of the shrink back. Fortunately, we also did not have new cattle coming in right behind them for that pen. That would have made it a lot more challenging. Good luck and hope you come out ok.
