Thanks Ben.  Judging from those pictures, the stress your crop was enduring from Mother Nature when I went through your area in late August, and similar situations I've observed here, it looks to me like your plants pretty much shut down and quit before they were able to complete transferring the stuff stored in those nubbins to the main ear.  Unfortunately you may have been stuck with the scenario where those second ears actually detracted from yield potential in the end.
