No doubt about it you did well. I suspect your Son will do equally well also. The fruit seldom falls far from the roots.

You have the skills

We have a Farm Truck licence if you will use that truck only for farming, no going to the movies, &c.
No taxes on farm supplies or equipment.

Two tier property taxes for farm property. (Not for living quarters. cost) No annual taxes for cars and PU's as long as you do not live in town.

Our farm business property taxes are based on the productivity value of the land. The land is taxed on the productive value not land speculation value.

My generation had it good. Went to a State Teachers College for $300 for all the cost persimester for room & board, books & tuition, plus some medical coverage.
It was just a short walk to US 81 now I-35, where I could hitch a ride home.
We could mow a lawn for a dollar. Another dollar for edging.

Times were good.
