Subject: RE:but what about the old?

SE Iowa
Around here everyone tiles on 40 or 50 feet. It can be tough getting fall on some fields. My uncle,,now deceased, installed a lot of tile over the years. He had to run a 12 inch main 2 miles from project one time to get fall. He told me farmer raised 190 bu corn next year after never raising more then 90 bu before the tile. In my situation, the main is working with good fall. This field went 253 bu this year but we had a dry spring for a change and never had water stand all year until this wet October. Previous years I had drowned out spots over about 7 of the 40 acres. I knew tile were on 99 feet and so we witched last fall and found them. Dug down and 100% plugged in spots. We plan to just abandon them and tile on 50 feet with new main as old main is exposed in neighbor's field from lack of care as it runs along a slough that was farmed thru.
