Would prefer heavy bred cows if they were available at reasonable price but the few heavies for sale are bringing astronomical prices. Can buy the med breds and feed them the extra months and net more on a per day basis. Lately it seems the vast majority of bred cows are 3-5 mo bred and the bulk of them are 4 mo bred. Think all these summer bred cows are the result of unusually abundant rain in late May and all of June resulting in abundant grass and hay thru July. This abundance of feed following several drought years has resulted in a very strong demand for anything bred especially the heavy breds. I just try to buy whatever will net me the most on a per day basis. Seems that whatever is the best buy varies over time so just have to go with the flow.
Would think thin cows should do well on pasture plus corn/ddgs but don't know about the economics. Probably only way to find out would be to buy a few and give it a try. Taking advantage of the historical fall to spring slaughter cow price increase plus increasing weight/yield of thin lower yielding cows has been a proven program if the weight gain is economical. Am feeding a few on waste silage plus whole cottonseed and a 14% supplement. | |
