Dumb question, I have a 22 rifle in the barn and shoot sparrows. I have never cleaned it except spray the bolt with WD 40. I am a bad shot to start with but I swear I have the birds in the cross sights and miss. Does bird shot not hold its pattern? I try to be less than 25 feet from target. I always say I could hit someone with the gun better than shooting someone with the gun.

Bird shot has almost no real hitting power at 25 feet anymore. (sounds crazy but it is true)The shot is light and more like dust than pellets.Distance is not a good friend of bird shot. At 25 feet you probably wouldn't break a old time barn window glass out, or at least the windows I have shot at with birdshot with birds fluttering in front of them never used to break in the dairy barn. Try birdshot on a aluminum pop can once at 25 foot and observe.
I shot a butcher hog once with birdshot accidently and he about laughed at me...
