If the market has a carry such as corn from DEC 14 to JUL 15 showing around $.30 carry, an elevator that is planning on waiting for basis improvement may buy DEC and sell JUL in order to lock in the carry and then sell DEC corn futures as they purchase the cash grain to have the carry locked in.
