A lot has changed since the 80's. ETOH continues. Protein from the sea much diminished, I can remember when the anchovy catch off shore Peru, was a market changer. China only needed one bowl of rice all year. OK, yields are much higher, and S. America grows a lot of soybeans. But use of dead animals as protein supplement no longer allowed. Production of all meat protein food is out of sight compared to the 80's. World population from 4500 million to 7000 million is a lot more mouths to feed.
Basically every bushel is needed and will find a home.
Doesn't change the fact that somehow TPTB can move markets as they wish. Is it the unseen hand. IDK, but the pendulum does swing.
