We made A frame buildings with the back 1/4 or so fenced off for the piglets and bumper bars on the sides back before we had farrowing crates. We would still lose one from time to time, but was better than when we tried open pens. I think a piglet area is key to pen type farrowing and keeping them from being crushed against a wall or fence.
