Screw down 2x4, removing old shingles if theres hay below will create a mess of nails and wood not to mention all the work involved.Have a bank barn we've done that to 25yrs ago and is still fine. If you have gutters on the barn it will probably now over shoot them though with the higher roof and water moves faster on a metal roof than wood.
