Driftless SW Wisconsin | One of the very interesting things about combines is how differently they perform in different crops/moisture conditions.
In dry (<20%) corn combine capacity is basically horsepower limited in most cases. In higher moisture corn combines are often separator or cleaner limited. In wheat and other small grains a combine's capacity will usually be limited by separator if the grain is down or windrowed or cleaning shoe. In beans a combine is often header loss limited.
So it is tough to say that any one combine will always outperform another. This is why European combines often have stirrers over the walkers, longer walkers and more cleaner capacity relative to hp then US cornbelt combines.
I think the class rating is as mentioned elsewhere a rough approximation of the relative hp and grain tank capacity and mostly relevent in drier (>25%) corn.
