southern MN | Very typical to put down 2x4 every 2 feet and screw the tin down. The air gap is nice, and the old shingles provide a barrier for moisture, heat, etc.
When I was a teenager dad threw me on the barn roof, had me peel all the tar shingles off, leave the old wood shingles, pull all exposed nails, and put tin down on that.
It's held up fine, and the old wood shingles are a nice barrier.
However, that was not fun work, would not recommend the job to anyone......
