Do you have rotten boards? You should be able to inspect them from below. Typically, around here, you lay down 2x4's etc, and screw into them, but on my barn the shingles were laying flat, the boards were in good shape and the roof was sound, so we just screwed the tin right over the shingles. My roofer friend has done several barns that way. I called the steel manufacturer myself and asked if it was okay, or if I needed a barrier. They approved the method. We used a garden rake to smooth up the shingles, removing any cupped corners.

Saved big money, between materials and time, doesn't leak, looks pretty good. (Actually, made the old windows look like crap, leading to the next project! :) )
