Around here, spraying with glyphosate, then straight cutting is pretty standard. It makes the straw a lot easier to get through. Without the glyphosate, probably better to swath. If neither is the option, then it better be good and ripe to straight cut, any green at all and it's probably going to be a long day or 5.
