Hagen Brothers farms,Goodrich ND | I went to an auction today, I was curious about an old hit & miss JD stationary engine, the big 6 hp version of the series that came in 1.5--3 and 6 hp. JD built them from 1923- 1946. I have had a 1.5 and 3 hp engine for 50+ years, but have never seen a 6 hp model, so had to go take a look. We recently got our 3 hp JD model E running in the 3 wheel trike parade toy.
I read on some of the online old engine sites that a well restored JD model E hit & miss engine can bring as much as $1000 per hp, so I wondered what this 6 hp might bring ?
This engine was not restored, but was a good looking survivor. Nothing was beat up or worn, engine appeared to never had been out in the weather, although the original paint was faded and cracked, but then it may well be 60- 80 years old.
Finally came time for that old engine to sell. It was suddenly surrounded by a group of grim faced bidders. The auctioneer tossed out a $200 starting bid, a dozen fingers waved in the air and the $200 rise in each asking bid was instantly answered, 2-4-6-8-$1000.
The auctioneer could see raising each bid $200 was a waste of time, so he jumped to $500 . $1000--1500--2000-2500--3000-3500--4000-4500-5000, not slowing up at all. I thought, yep, this one might hit that magic $1000 for each of it's 6 hp. Bidding hardly slowed at all as the price shot by $6000 and headed for $7000. Finally in the high $6000 range, it came down to a few bidders. The second to last said uncle at $7000 and another won the auction a $7200. Someone wanted that thing real bad lol. :)
