No he is not he is a hobby farmer. Man everyone needs some perspective. $50/ acre profits used to be good so what does that get you for an income on 1000 acres. Not enough to live on let alone do much investing. Think of a business they might make 5% roi that guys works 70hrs a week 50 weeks a year probably would not take less than 100k income. What does he need in gross revenue to make that? $2000000. What we have seen over the last 10 years will not happen for another generation. Prepare for it and realize that a guy running 1000 acres better not have $1000000 in equipment or he is going to loose his shirt. I can't believe the stuff I see people running on not many acres these days. New paint disease kills.
The dollars per hr. on a straight dry land crop farm making $50 acre is pretty good hourly wage. Now if he owns 500 or so of that then its $50 anacre + going rent so his incom increases to $25k on 500 rented acres and $100-150k on owned acres. A lot of net income difference on paid for land compared to making payments or renting-sharecropping
