When you look back trough the archives even most of the farmers in the 40's and 50's had off farm jobs and the farm was never intended to fully support the family for income. I think that thinking has become somewhat of a newer luxury that people try to afford so they don't have to go to a "regular" job every day like most of the population. The stay at home famer is a bit of a new idea. My grandfather worked off the farm 6 days a week for the railroad in the 40's and also ran a thrashing and baling business and grandma sold eggs to subsidize the farm. So if a guy goes out and earns $100 grand off the farm and pays for his operating loans in cash good for him. Great success story. He doesn't get to stay home all day every day but that's the way it goes.
