Went looking on USDA, Found this under 2012 Census. No. of operations by size with $50,000 in sales. Tried to estimate corn acres in each catagory by calculating production assuming average yield of 158 bushel per acre. When I used the median acres per operation ie. 1/2 I came up with a total production of 27 billion bushel. When I cut the est. corn acres to half of the median ie. 1/4 then I got 13.7 billion bushel. That's about where you would expect total production to be.
I don't know if I trust the results but since the larger operations produce most of the corn you might conclude that either the major crop of these large operations isn't corn or the smaller operations are producing a very much smaller proportion of the corn crop.
I guess this was kind of a meaningless exercise.
