A couple points. First of all I'm guessing there are some situations where the option is sell at a small loss or wait and risk selling at a big loss. In this situation it makes sense to consider minimizing further risk by making sales and using another risk management tool to capture potential market rallies. Secondly, nobody in the Midwest is gonna "shut down the factory". Land has an opportunity cost, whether rented or owned. Letting it lay fallow is a losing proposition on land with any kind of production potential.
