I think everybody is missing the point.

The nation takes a day off to recognize the importance of labor.  But one of the fundamental elements of our society is ignored by the majority of the population. 

These things have meanings and affects on the psyche of the average person.  By not having any recognized celebration of the most basic of our needs, food and fiber production we devalue it in the eyes of the public.  A fact that is evident in the lack of concern about the well being of agriculture by those who constantly complain about prepackaged and processed food cost while spending equivalent amounts for cable TV and smart phones.
