Spring Grove MN | Our experience is as follows. We have run Pixalls on a 40 series corn head. The are mile ahead of the JD rollers. We quit stalk chopping at this time. We have run JD knife rolls. They do well. Not as good as the pixalls in my opinion. Pixalls are 10 flute, I believe compared to 4 on a knife roll. I have run Calmer knife rolls. They work a little better than stock JD knife rolls and you can convert the JD knife rolls to match them. The new Calmer choppers look like the perfect setup to me. I would have got them on my new head but they were not yet available. We currently have the JD intermeshing knife rolls, 6 knives per roll I believe. These do the best job of what we have owned so far.
To make the Pixalls or the knife rolls perform best, we had to speed up the head which then can create shelling/head loss unless you add a slow down kit. Also, we had the Pixalls on a 444 head running on a sidehill combine. They will take some extra HP. We did end up cracking the side sheets from the PTO shaft and the telescoping pressure from leveling. We beefed them up and got along fine. This head was over 15 years old at the time.
If you harvest above 5MPH it will be hard to get really good chopping and not have head loss without having a true chopping corn head in my opinion.
I believe we have several rows of brand new 4 flute knife rolls that we would be willing to make you a heck of a deal on to get them out of the shop if you are interested.
