Are the nodules pink when you cut them open? First time beans should have either a double inoculation (granular in addition to the seed treatment or double dose on the seed). I prefer a broadcast granular in addition to the seed treatment .

Best to dig a plant with a shovel and break apart the direct clods as a lot of nodules will be on the lateral roots if the granular was broadcast.
