They made ice locally, the railroads then used the ice to ship produce. I am guessing this was before mechanical reefer cars.
Just how would they go about making ice locally in Texas? I didn't think it got cold long enough there to ice over much of anything, much less make 3' blocks.
A what is it picture. I know what it is but do you?
