They work great for hooking a 540 pto to a 1000 shaft when you don't have the option of switching shafts or you just plain don't want to have the engine running full throttle for a light load.
Even better is a tractor that has a shiftable pto.
Some of the old Whites have a 540/1000 pto setup where the 1000 shaft can be run 540 rpm and the 540 shaft can be run 1000 rpm.
Works great for all kinds of things. Those old Whites also have an "engine speed" pto that turns at engine speed and direction (CCW).
