It was troubling that the railroad right of way was given for free to a rail line; after the line is abandoned the railroad can sell it, not need to return it to those they took it from.

Business is in the business of chasing dollars, just how it is. Fuel is offering top dollar right now for transportation, so that is how it is. Grain has been a near worthless commodity since the 1980s, going down in relative value for a long time now. Even the high prices of the last few years are lower than 'parity' value however that is figured.

Of course there is not much incentive to cheaply haul a cheap commodity when there is better fruit out there.

It's where we rank, our lot in life. We need to invest in ethanol plants, livestock facilities, and other end users in our backyard so we don't have to haul the cheap junk away.....
