I, too, was a banker in a former life (consumer loans and retail banking, never commercial loans), and I have found it best if the customer thinks of banking like this.
Always try to place yourself on the other side of the desk and ask yourself the question, "Would I make this loan?"
Sometimes it looks a lot different on the other side.
