That sounds like it may be a weak ignition coil or magneto as the case may be. I have had about the same experience with a magneto on an old airplane. It used the same magnetos that were on some Case tractors. When cold, it would start just fine, but as soon as the magnetos warmed up, you better be ready for a forced landing!
